Student Information

Baby Elephants

Baby elephants are called calves. When a calf is born, it stays very close to its mother. The mother elephant teaches her baby many things.

One of the most important things a baby elephant learns is how to use its trunk. A newborn calf's trunk is not very strong. It cannot pick up things yet. The mother elephant shows her baby how to move its trunk. She uses her trunk to pick up food and water. The baby watches and tries to copy what its mother does.

Baby elephants also learn how to find food. Their mother takes them to places where there are trees, grass, and plants. The calf watches as its mother strips leaves from branches. The mother wraps her trunk around the leaves and pulls them off. Soon, the baby elephant does the same thing.

The baby elephant learns other behaviors from watching its mom too. It learns how to take mud baths to stay cool and clean. It learns how to make sounds and calls to talk to other elephants. It even learns how to play with other young elephants in the herd.

A baby elephant stays with its mother for many years. During this time, it learns everything it needs to know to be a grown-up elephant. By copying its mother, the baby elephant learns how to survive and be part of the elephant family.
